TACLOBAN CITY – Several areas in Northern Samar, including the provincial capital Catarman, were hit by heavy flooding on Tuesday caused by incessant rains caused by a low-pressure area and a shear line.

A report by the city’s information office shows that at least 1,263 people were evacuated in Catarman after their homes were flooded.

The number of affected families is expected to increase as some are still trapped in their homes due to flooding, said Rachel Arnaiz, the city’s information director.

Arnaiz said collecting data was difficult because the power had been out since Monday evening.

“This is the worst flooding in Catarman in almost five decades,” Arnaiz said.

Classes and work at Catarman have been canceled since Monday.

Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan opened the provincial junior high school to Catarman residents who have to evacuate.
