Officers of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps have arrested a 76-year-old man in Abeokuta on suspicion of raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl.
Ogun Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, told journalists in Abeokuta on Saturday that the septuagenarian would be arraigned to get justice for the victim.
The minister expressed concern about the rising rate of sexual abuse in the country and appealed to victims to always speak out.
She also called on parents to stop removing rape cases from the law.
“There is a growing number of people who report rape incidents to the police and then turn around and take them back.
“Parents are advised to report cases of violence against their children and wards to the police and not withdraw such cases until justice is served.
“Withdrawals of violations of the law provide an incentive for perpetrators to continue their crimes,” Adeleye said.
