After their morning coffee, one couple’s lives changed forever when they realized their Lotto winnings were not just $8,333 as they initially thought, but a whopping $8.3 million jackpot.
A couple from Hamilton, New Zealand, dieddiscovered they had amassed a huge fortune after an official from Lotto NZ sent them an email confirming their winnings.
“I was drinking coffee and reading work emails when I came across an email from Lotto NZ saying I had won the prize,” the man said.
The Hamilton couple didn’t realize they were millionaires until they were notified by Lott New Zealand that they had won NZ$8.3 million.
“I hopped on the MyLotto app to check my ticket but didn’t notice the numbers matched because I was too busy drinking coffee,” the man said.
“When I looked at the ticket again, it had NZ$8.3 million on top, which at first glance looked like NZ$8,333. Honestly, I was quite happy with it!
“I called my partner to have a look and she also thought it was NZ$8,333.
“We were shocked and thought it was too good to be true, but when we checked online and saw that someone in Hamilton had won NZ$8.3 million, we realized we had actually won.”
The man said he didn’t realize they knew the winning numbers for the jackpot drawing
The shocking news has still not reached the couple and they have not yet decided what they want to do with the cash.
“We’re back to work and let’s not rush to buy anything crazy, although we will be able to go a little crazy this Christmas,” the man said.
“We plan to take time to think about what we really want to do. But we will definitely repay the loan and help the family.
This victory has opened up many opportunities for us and we want to make sure we make the most of them.
The $8.3 million prize consisted of $8 million from Powerball First Division and $333,333 from NZ Lotto First Division.
