Canelo Álvarez vs. Billy Joe Saunders: What’s at Stake?

Almost every boxer who steps in the ring has one thing on their mind i.e. collect as many jewels as possible. The Canelo vs. Saunders fight is no different either.

This title unification bout will pit the reigning and defending WBO super-middleweight champion, Billy Joe Saunders against the current WBA (Super), WBC, and The Ring super middleweight champion, Saul “Canelo” Álvarez.

Who starts as the favorite?

Canelo will be heading into this fight with a 55-1-2 record. It’s worth noting that the one loss in his record came from his light-middleweight bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. When it comes to the super-middleweight division, the Mexican boxing star is not only untouchable but undefeated as well.

As for Billy Joe Saunders, the “Superb” sports a professional boxing record of 30-0.

So, the titles aren’t the only factor in the upcoming clash. Both men are also putting their undefeated streaks on the line.

When is this Fight Going Down and How it Came to Be?

The pair was originally scheduled to square off on May 2, 2020. However, plans got shelved once the COVID-19 pandemic forced the world of sports to shut down.

Alvarez then proposed the fight to be held on September 12th. However, payment issues between him, DAZN, and Golden Boy Promotions stopped the initial talks from materializing any further.

After getting his release from the Golden Boy Promotions late last year, Canelo trumped Callum Smith in December to win his three super-middleweight titles. He then successfully defended all three of these jewels against Avni Yıldırım back in February 2021.

As for Saunders, he opted out of the match against Alvarez (slated for September 2020) as he believed he wouldn’t be ready in time. He would return to the ring in December 2020 to defeat fellow British boxer, Martin Murray and retain his WBO super-middleweight championship.

Following his decisive victory against Murray, Saunders challenged Alvarez and demanded his team to start the paperwork.

And thus, this highly-anticipated clash was signed for May 8, 2021.

What do Alvarez and Saunders have to Say about their Upcoming Fight?

Billy Joe Saunders appears to be quite confident heading into a fight that has the potential to change the landscape of the sport known as professional boxing. He said:

“I believe I am the only one with the footwork, know-how, skillset, mindset, and brain to unlock that door in Canelo. He’s the main man in the sport and the face of boxing. You have to give him respect, he hasn’t ducked anyone, he’s beaten good names, but nobody is unbeatable, and I believe I have got the tools to beat him if I use them correctly and the strategy works out.”

Canelo Alvarez, on the other hand, has clearly expressed his intention to add more gold to his trophy case. While conversing with the Boxing Scene, he said: “He (Saunders) is a hard fighter. He’s a southpaw and he likes to talk. But we’re gonna be ready for him, and I’m gonna train to be ready for him. I’m very motivated. Getting the titles motivates me very much.”
