Grandson says Rosalynn Carter went to hospice

According to her grandson, former first lady Rosalynn Carter was placed in hospice.

“She and President Carter spend time with each other and their family,” Jason Carter said in a statement. “The Carter family continues to request privacy and appreciates the outpouring of love and support.”

In May, the Carter Center announced that the former first lady was suffering from dementia. Rosalynn Carter, 96, has been a long-time mental health advocate, including during her tenure in the White House from 1977 to 1981. She is the founder of the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregivers.

Former president Jimmy Carter (99) entered home hospice in February.

The Carters made a surprise public appearance in September, driving an SUV at the Plains Peanut Festival.

In July, the Carters celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary. They are the longest presidential couple.
