“I don’t want to be him, I want to be myself,” says Liverpool’s summer signing when asked about being compared to Steven Gerrard
Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai responded with confidence when asked about the similarities between himself and Steven Gerrard. The Hungarian midfielder insisted he was ready to make a similar impact at Anfield as the Reds icon.
The Merseyside side signed Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig this summer for £60m as part of a major midfield overhaul. A number of key midfielders have left the club this summer, including Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner and Naby Keita.
The Reds have signed Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch to strengthen their midfield options. The Hungarian international received the number 8 shirt, once worn by the legendary Steven Gerrard, ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Naturally, this led to comparisons with the former England international who built a legacy at Anfield. When asked about this, Szoboszlai said in an interview with Football Focus (according to Liverpool’s official website):
“I don’t want to be him, I want to be me. But of course, if they put a document in front of me now and say that you will have the same influence or the same career here at Liverpool, I will sign it directly!”
Szoboszlai has impressed for Liverpool so far this season. The Hungarian midfielder has scored two goals and the same number of assists in 17 appearances in various competitions this season.
Time will tell if he can emulate Gerrard’s rich and decorated career at the club.

Expert Michael Brown has predicted Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City on November 25. He supported the Merseyside team who will be fighting for the Premier League title this season.
Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently second in the league table after a great start to the 2023/24 season, losing only once so far (to Tottenham Hotspur). The Reds are just one point behind league leaders Manchester City and a victory in the upcoming fixture will put them at the top.
Brown believes the Merseyside outfit have the potential to secure all three points against Pep Guardiola’s men and put themselves in the hot seat in the title race. The expert told BBC Sport:
You have to look and say that Liverpool are real title contenders this season and are very close to Manchester City. I believe they can achieve a good result. In a few cases they were unlucky in their results, they just did well, getting work done without anything special.”
However, he added that he believed the Reds had problems in midfield that needed to be resolved. Brown said:
“The midfield still needs improvement, but how will they fare against Manchester City? This is the biggest test.”
