ICC Rankings for ODI All Rounders (2021)
ICC always publish their annual rankings. International Cricket Council is the leading governing body of cricket. This time also ICC has announced the new rankings. They have announced the latest rankings on 7 June. I have written this article for the ODI format. The ICC rankings for ODI All Rounders is the topic we are going to discuss through this write-up.
All Rounders is a rare breed in world cricket. It is not very common that we see a complete All Rounder. Most of the players are either bowling or batting all-rounders. An All-Rounder is the most valuable asset in any format. In ODI cricket they can change the game with a bat. In bowling, they can bowl some overs.
MRF Tyres is the sponsor of ICC. So, they share their name in ICC rankings. ICC introduced ratings in 1987. Ted Dexter suggested it. It was to produce a better indication of players than the previous way of rankings. Match conditions, the strength of the opposition, and recent form are considered in ratings. We will look at the all-rounders’ rankings. These five players are impact players. They are vital players for their respective teams.
ICC rankings for ODI All Rounders : Rashid Khan
Rashid is fifth in ICC rankings of all-rounders. He has 270 rating points in the rankings. In my opinion, Rashid is a bowling All-rounder. Rashid Khan picked 15 wickets in 17 ODI matches. His economy was just 4.87. In 2021, he has played just 3 matches but dismissed 7 batsmen. The latest ranking is the price of his performance this year.
Rashid does not believe in spinning the ball very much. He tries to fox the batsmen more with his pace variation. Also, Rashid has an advantage due to speed. At such speed, if the bowls turn away it is dangerous. Also, the wrong ones the most lethal weapon he has in his bowling.
Rashid Khan is the first player with 40+ runs and 4+ wickets in two matches against a team in ODIs. Rashid Khan is the first player to pick 100 wickets. He has 100 wickets in 44 matches. Also, he has the best bowling figures to his name.
ICC rankings for ODI All Rounders : Chris Woakes
Woakes is a very versatile All Rounder. In the year 2020, Woakes picked up 7 wickets in 5 ODIs. He is ranked fourth. Also, he has scored 1 half-century. One year before that in 2019, he was in terrific form. He picked 29 wickets from 19 ODI matches. This includes one five-wicket haul by him.
Woakes is a bowling all-rounder. He has the ability to pick wickets in the powerplay. Also, Woakes can bowl quality death bowling. Plus, his batting skills make him valuable in the ODI setup. Should England play him in the T20 format?. This is the question the England cricket team should ponder. He can be an impactful addition in the T20s.
ICC rankings for ODI All Rounders: Mohammad Nabi
Mohammad Nabi is third in the ICC All Rounders Rankings. Nabi bowls off-spin and usually bats lower down the order. He is considered one of the best all-rounders according to ICC. I disagree with this assumption looking at the quality of opposition he plays. Afghanistan plays more cricket with minnows like Ireland and Scotland. Nabi has played just 1 ODI match against South Africa. Also, his record against the elite teams except India is not satisfactory. Some careful observation of his stats will make one realize that he cannot be tagged as one of the best all-rounders.
If he performs well against big teams like England, New Zealand, Australia and India then his performance will justify the rankings. In 2019 he has scored 347 runs in 18 matches. This year he has 35 runs from 3 matches. In his bowling, he has 18 wickets in 2019 and 2021. For Nabi to excel, Afghanistan needs to play the sport with quality opposition. Also, they should play for more days.
Stokes is without a doubt one of the best all-rounders in world cricket. Stoke bats with aggressive intent. He is second in the rankings. He has won many matches for the team single-handedly. Also, with his medium pace, he can trouble batsmen. He can pick quick wickets at the top or also provide them in the middle. His rise in the sport has been very heroic. The journey started from some disastrous moments to the best moments in his career.
In the 2016 T20 world cup, he was hit for four sixes by Carlos Braithwait in the last over. Then, he was involved in a bar fight in 2017. Since then he has started consistently performing on the field. The Ashes was the first instance where he batted through the innings and won it for the team. Another time it was on the grandest stage. He played brilliant innings in the final of the ICC world cup 2019.
Stokes scored 719 runs from 20 matches in ODI cricket. Also, he scored 135 runs from 3 matches in 2021. While bowling his medium pace he has picked 16 wickets in those 2 years. Stokes is a batting all-rounder. England can try him at the top of the order. His aggressive intent might be very impactful there.
1.Shakib Al Hasan
Shakib Al Hasan is a very talented player. He is at the top of the rankings. He is one of the men in the Bangladesh cricket team who have a responsibility to perform for the team. Shakib has always dominated the ICC rankings for many years. He is a left-arm slow bowler. Shakib does not turn the ball very much accuracy is his strength. He takes wickets with tight lines and lengths.
Shakib has been always impressive in bowling. He picked 13 wickets from 11 matches in the year 2019. Also, in 2021 he took 9 wickets from 6 ODI matches. His batting was also superb in both these years. He scored 746 runs in 11 matches with a mammoth average of 93.25. In 2021 runs he scored 132 runs in 6 matches.
Shakib is a quality talent and there is no doubt about that. He is a senior player in the Bangladeshi team. He must use his experience to get the success for the team.
Overall, the rankings do the correct assessment of all-rounders in world cricket. Jacques Kallis was the last all-rounder who was a pure all-rounder. He was able to pick wickets with his medium pace. Score runs in all formats of the game. The Cricket world right now needs this kind of player. In the current era, I see Ben Stokes as the most effective all-rounder. He has won the match for his team single-handedly against the quality opposition.
