James L. Brooks’ new film ‘Ella McCay’ features an all-star ensemble including Emma Mackey, Woody Harrelson, Jamie Lee Curtis and Albert Brooks as a 20th Century Boards project

EXCLUSIVE: It’s been almost 13 years since James L. Brooks last directed a film, and it looks like fans of the Oscar-winning writer/director will soon get their wish as his next project nears release. Sources tell Deadline that Brooks’ next film will appear in more than just the 20th century Ella McCkay but Emma Mackey, Jamie Lee Curtis, Woody Harrelson, Ayo Edibiri, Albert Brooks, Kumail Nanjiani and Spike Fearn are in negotiations to appear in the picture.
“As one of the most empathetic playwrights of our time, James Brooks has been setting the bar in film and television for decades,” said Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios. “WITH TV news Down The Simpsons“Jim is also a fundamental part of the foundations of the 20th century, and we couldn’t be more proud to support him in his long-awaited return to directorship.”
The film will tell the story of a young, idealistic politician who balances family problems with a challenging professional life as he prepares to take over from his mentor, the state’s longtime incumbent governor.
Brooks will also produce alongside his producing partners Julie Ansell and Richard Sakai, who will produce the film under their Gracie Films banner. Seth Meier will serve as executive producer.

Although Brooks hasn’t directed a film since the 2010 comedy How do you know starring Owen Wilson and Reese Witherspoon, he remains very busy in production, most recently working on an adaptation of Judy Bloom’s novel Are you there God? It’s me, Małgorzata. The film, released by Lionsgate earlier this year, received much acclaim, and star Rachel McAdams recently received a nomination for Gotham.
