NHL Insider weighs in on the league’s proposed change to the 3-on-3 overtime rules

NHL officials are examining potential changes that could increase excitement around the game. One of the key areas discussed is the 3v3 overtime format, which has been an exciting addition to the sport since its introduction in the 2015-16 season.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently shared his thoughts on the proposed 3-on-3 overtime rule change, shedding light on its potential impact.

Friedman highlighted a compelling case study from the BCHL, where the move to 10-minute 3-on-3 overtime resulted in a significant drop in the number of games going to penalties, from 41% to just 14%.

“Someone contacted me from the BCHL and said that this year, as they noticed this year, they were playing 3-on-3 for 10 minutes and the percentage of games ending in penalties dropped from 41 to 14.” Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast.

This statistic creates some intriguing possibilities for an NHL team to consider making changes to their own overtime format.

The proposed change is to extend 3-on-3 overtime to 10 minutes, with the aim of reducing the reliance on penalty shootouts and providing a more comprehensive display of team depth.

According to Friedman, the longer duration prevents teams from shortening their benches too quickly, ensuring a deeper player rotation and potentially more dynamic and unpredictable gameplay.

Friedman said,

“I actually think the solution might be to play 3-on-3 for 10 minutes,” Friedman added. “What you really see is that you can’t shorten the bench as much as you can in 5 minutes. You have to go deeper into your group than you did in five minutes of overtime because the guys get tired.”

NHL general managers meeting on Tuesday

Colin Campbell, the NHL’s senior executive vice president of Hockey Operations, confirmed that discussions were ongoing during Tuesday’s general managers’ meeting about a potential switch to 3-on-3 overtime. He expressed concern about the possibility of teams regrouping in the neutral zone, which could reduce confusion and the excitement that this format brought to the game for the first time.

During these discussions, various ideas were considered, including: eliminating the possibility of pulling the puck out of the attacking zone after crossing the blue line and introducing a shot clock that would encourage more aggressive play. The challenge, however, is finding the right balance to keep the game flowing without disrupting the natural rhythm.

Data-driven conversations about overtime changes will continue when NHL general managers reconvene in March. The goal remains to increase the excitement of the game and incorporate evolving strategies, while maintaining the integrity and spontaneity that fans love in 3v3 overtime.
