Ogun University acquits student accused of poisoning girl

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has cleared Oladokun Ayomide, a final-year student of the university, of poisoning his girlfriend and another woman.
Metro PUNCH had earlier reported that the Ogun State Police Command had arrested Ayomide for allegedly poisoning Ugbokwe Mmasichukwu and another woman, Odumosu Semilore.
Police said the suspect on Friday administered poison believed to be laced with brownies, alcohol and an unknown harmful substance after he invited his girlfriend to his residence in the Surulere community within the camp.
However, according to a statement by the Deputy Director, Media, FUNAAB, Olasunkanmi Olajide, made available to our correspondent on Thursday, the biscuits purchased by Ayomide “contained high levels of alcohol. This led to unintentional poisoning of consumers.
“Ayomide had no ill intentions, as confirmed by a medical examination conducted at their institution’s health center. Affected people were discharged from the hospital the next day and even participated in research on November 10, 2023.
“It is important to emphasize that all charges against Ayomide, made by the parents and school of the affected ladies, have been dropped due to the absence of malicious intent,” the school said.
Contacted on Thursday, the command, through its Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed that the student had been released on bail following a settlement reached by the students’ parents.
“He (Ayomide) is entitled to bail. The girl recovered and has already been discharged from the hospital. The parents have reconciled,” she revealed in a WhatsApp message.
