South Africa vs Australia, second semi-final: What happened in yesterday’s match at the 2023 World Cup?

Australia defeated South Africa by three wickets in the second semi-final of the 2023 World Cup played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata yesterday.

Batting first after winning the toss, the Proteas were bowled out, scoring a disappointing 212 in 49.4 overs. After a good start, the Australians stumbled in the chase but reached the finish line in 47.2 overs.

Australia will now face India in the 2023 World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday, November 19.

The Australians started brilliantly with the ball, reducing South Africa’s score to 24/4 within 12 overs. Captain Temba Bavuma was dismissed without scoring, hitting the ball after a shot by Mitchell Starc (3/34). Quinton de Kock, who had a great league phase, looked out of sorts in the semi-final and had his wicket thrown out for 3 off 14 balls while trying to face Josh Hazlewood (2/12).

Aiden Markram (10) mishandled the ball from Starc to backward point, while Rassie van der Dussen’s (6 off 31) misfortune ended when he tripped Hazlewood and led to his second over. David Miller (101 off 116) steadfastly defended South Africa with a century. Accompanied by Heinrich Klaasen (47 off 48), he crossed the 100-run mark in South Africa.

The 95-run stand ended with unexpected success when Klaasen was bowled by part-time non-spinner Travis Head (21/2). Marco Jansen was then caught for the weight of a golden duck. Miller bowled South Africa over 200 before he was killed trying to beat Cummins.

Australia survived the scare and secured their place in the final

Chasing 213, Australia started the game brilliantly, reaching 60 after six overs. Markram made the much-needed breakthrough for South Africa by equaling David Warner on 29 off 18.

Mitchell Marsh (0) came in after a brilliant cover catch by Van der Dussen off the bowling of Kagiso Rabada. Head (62 off 48) and Steve Smith (30 off 62) featured in a crucial 45-run knock that put Australia back in front.

There was a slight flutter as Head was bowled by Keshav Maharaj (1/24) while the energetic Tabraiz Shamsi (2/42) dismissed Marnus Labuschagne (18) and Glenn Maxwell (1).

Steven Smith (30) and Josh Inglis (28) struck crucial knocks before losing to the thrilling Gerald Coetzee (2/47). The bowling duo of Starc (16 not out) and Cummins (14 not out) batted judiciously to take the Australians home.
