Steely Dan, Blondie, Public Enemy, REM and Heart among 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees

Steely Dan, Blondie, Public Enemy, REM, Timbaland and the writer of bubblegum classics “Build Me Up Buttercup” and “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)” are among the 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame nominees.

The list of nominees also included Bread frontman David Gates, Tracy Chapman, Randy Bachman & Burton Cummings of Guess Who’s, Kenny Loggins, Heart and Roger Nichols, who composed the music for such Carpenters hits as “We’ve Only Just Begun” and “Rainy Days and Mondays.”

According to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, a songwriter with a significant catalog of songs is eligible for induction 20 years after the first significant commercial release of the song. Eligible voting members will have until midnight Eastern Time on December 27, 2023 to cast ballots, selecting three candidates from the songwriter category and three from the performer songwriter category.

The shortlist will be announced next year at the organization’s 2024 awards gala in New York.
