EXCLUSIVE: UTA has signed Ilker Çatak, the writer and director behind Germany’s official international feature film Oscar candidate Teachers’ Loungefor representation in all areas.
Dramatic thriller acquired by Sony Pictures Classics after premiering at the Berlin Film Festival, where it won Label European Cinemas and CICAE Awards Teachers’ Lounge will hit U.S. theaters on December 24. The latest film by the German-Turkish award winner focuses on teacher Carla Nowak (Leona Benesch), who decides to get to the bottom of the matter when one of her students is suspected of theft. Caught between her ideals and the school system, the consequences of her actions threaten to break her.
Over the summer, the film won German Film Awards, including best film, screenplay, director, actress and editing. The film made its North American premiere in Telluride before making its way to TIFF and AFI Fest, and is currently nominated for Best Screenplay and Actress at the European Film Awards.
Çatak’s first feature film from 2017 Once upon a time… Indianerlandadaptation of the award-winning youth novel Once upon a time there was an Indian country by Nils Mohl. His second, I was, I am, I will bereceived the Bronze Lola at the 2019 German Film Awards in 2019, and his film Istanbul Gardenreleased in Germany in 2021, competed at the same ceremony.
